Gay Travel Guide Fort Lauderdale + Wilton Manors
With beautiful white sandy beaches, a warm year-round climate, moderate prices and a thriving Gay community, Fort Lauderdale is a great place to live and an attractive Gay travel destination. In past decades, Miami and Key West were the primary South Florida destinations, but changing demographics and skyrocketing real estate costs tipped the scales in Fort Lauderdale’s favor. Many men and some Gay business in Key West and Miami moved to Fort Lauderdale. Over the past 15 years, Fort Lauderdale’s Gay community grew substantially and its Gay businesses multiplied.
Wilton Manors, a relatively small independent city surrounded by Fort Lauderdale, evolved over these years to become a thriving Gay neighborhood and a vibrant Gay business and entertainment district. What started with a couple Gay bars, the suburban-style strip mall, the Shoppes of Wilton Manors, has evolved to being the central area to a growing number of Gay bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and retail stores.
Started in 1993, the GLCC of Fort Lauderdale was a welcoming “safe space” for Gay People in Fort Lauderdale. In 2009, the renamed Pride Center at Equality Park moved and reopened in the current Wilton Manor’s campus with 30,000 sq ft of meeting rooms and office space. With the substantial increase and space along with strong leadership, the Pride Center grew to became an important service and community center for Fort Lauderdale’s LGBTI+ community. The Centers hosts a wide range of activities so visitors would check the schedule, visit and take part. Check the Community Calendars for al that is happening.
