Gay Travel Guide

In past decades, San Francisco was most often named as guy’s favorite Gay destination.  These days, it’s Barcelona.   Barcelona is popular for many reasons.  It has history, culture, great architecture, a sunny mild climate, lot’s of Gay night life, great beaches, moderate costs, and the world’s biggest circuit event.

Gay Neighborhood

In the late  1800’s, in the time of the industrial  revolution, Barcelona’s population was expanding greatly.   The  city needed to expand  beyond its old walls.   A major expansion of the city was designed  with special regard to space, leisure, and a health environment.  This new are became known as Eixample meaning “expansion.”   The Eixample area includes many of Barcelona’s iconic structures including Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia and his fashionable Casa Mila-La Pedrera.   This new  ‘modernist’ area was designed with a grid system of streets and bisected by diagonal boulevards.   Within the Eixample, there are six neighborhoods.  Although not an official neighborhood, an area of Eixample between the Gran Via, Balmes and Aragó streets became known in recent years as Gaixample.  With many Gay-centric  bars, saunas, restaurants and stores, Gaixample is the center for Gay visitors and nightlife. Gaixample is also home to the well-regarded Gay-centric Axel Hotel Barcelona.
